Large amounts of  Calcium are included as it has been shown that Calcium can reduce or prevent bone loss, and when taken in combination with Vitamin D can actually increase bone density.  Absorption is maximized when individual doses do not exceed 500mg, so it is best to take this supplement in two doses.  Magnesium is also involved in calcium transport and seemingly affects bone re-absorption and mineralization.

Boron may positively affect Calcium and Vitamin D metabolism and may moderate the effect of estrogen on bone. Betaine HCl may act on calcium supplements in the stomach to assist with more efficient absorption.
