Niacin is included as research has shown that people who consume higher amounts of niacin (17-45 mg/day) from food and multivitamin sources have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease compared to people who consume less niacin.  The role of zinc in Alzheimer's disease might be both protective and causative. Laboratory studies suggest that zinc might contribute to aggregation of amyloid beta peptide, but protect against subsequent neurotoxicity as an antioxidant. 

DHA is taken up by the brain in preference to other fatty acids, is thought to be important for normal neural function and might play a key role in the structural development of neural and synaptic membranes.  Αlpha Lipoic Acid has been used in some animal tests producing some success in the treatment of various neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease.

Taking Ginkgo Leaf extract orally seems to improve cognitive function in some elderly people with mild to moderate age-related memory impairment. Ginkgo Leaf extract might modestly improve some measures of cognitive function, particularly short-term visual memory and possibly speed of cognitive processing, in non-demented patients with age-related memory impairment.  Taking Ginkgo Leaf orally seems to modestly improve symptoms of Alzheimer's, vascular, or mixed dementias

Taking Acetyl-L-carnitine orally seems to improve some measures of cognitive function and memory in elderly people with age-related mental impairment.  Consumption of Green Tea and other caffeinated beverages seems to prevent a decline in alertness and cognitive capacity when consumed throughout the day.
