5-HTP is used by the human body to make Serotonin which is central to normal nerve and brain function. Serotonin also plays a significant role in sleep, emotional moods, pain control, inflammation, intestinal peristalsis, and other body functions. 5-HTP has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of depressive illness. St John's Wort is an age-old treatment for depression and anxiety. Test tube studies suggest that St.John's Wort exerts its antidepressant actions by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitters Serotonin, Norepinephrine, and Dopamine.

L- Glutamic acid (glutamate) is an amino acid used by the body to build proteins. Glutamate is the most common excitatory (stimulating) neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and has been used in the treatment of depression, moodiness, irritability, anxiety and insomnia. L- Tyrosine is also the precursor of several neurotransmitters, including L-Dopa, Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Epinephrine. L-Tyrosine metabolism may be abnormal in depressed people and early research suggests supplementation may help. Preliminary research has also indicated that Phenylalanine may be useful in the treatment of depression.

Warnings:

Please inform your doctor if you plan to take this supplement alongside anti-depressant medication, as it can enhance the effect. 5 HTP is reported to cause seizures in patients with Down's Syndrome. Phenylalanine should be avoided in people with inherited disorders of phenylalanine metabolism known as Phenylketouria (PKU). L-phenylalanine can exacerbate Tardive Dyskinesia in people with schizophrenia.
