Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) are both long-chain omega-3- polyunsaturated fatty acids which are commonly found in fish oil.  These are often referred to as ‘essential oils' due to the fact that they cannot be synthesized by the body.

Fish oil in both dietary and supplemental form has been showed to be effective in reducing blood triglycerides by between 20-50%. This effect is seemingly dose-dependant, studies have used 1000-4000mg per day.  Fish oil has been shown to be possibly effective in decreasing the risk of death in patients with coronary artery disease.   Taken orally in doses of 1000 mg twice per day in conjunction with adjunct therapy it may serve to improve symptoms of recurrent depression.   DHA is a major fatty acid in sperm and brain phospholipids, and especially in the retina. It has also been linked with decreasing incidence of Age-related Macular degeneration. 

Warnings:

Because of the possible anti-thrombotic effect of fish oil supplements, hemophiliacs and those taking warfarin (Coumadin) should exercise caution in their use.
