Peridontal (gum) diseases, characterized by chronic inflammation and a loss of the bone and soft tissues that surround the teeth constitute one of the most common chronic infections in humans.  Zinc and Iron are important minerals in maintaining the immune system to fight such infections.  Vitamin C is also important in for its role in the immune systemto prevent infection in the tooth and mouth.  It is also crucial in the formation of collagen which is found in the dentin of the tooth.  Zinc and copper may also help to reduce inflammation associated with infections in the mouth. Vitamin B6 and B12 are important in preventing raised homocysteine levels which can increase the body's susceptibility to infection.

Vitamins C, D, E and fish n-3 fatty acids reduce tissue destruction, enhance wound healing, and increase bone strength and rate of bone formation.  Calcium and Vitamin D have a beneficial effect on bones and on tooth retention.  Minerals such as calcium magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, boron and vanadium are all essential to bone and tooth health.
